Geshe Jampa Gyaltsen
Resident Teacher at Tibetan Buddhist Institute
Geshe Jampa Gyaltsen (b. 1964) is an accomplished teacher of Buddhist philosophy and much loved and respected by his many students in Australia and India. Geshe-la is warm, kind, of sharp intellect and never misses an opportunity to teach and inspire as he engages with everyone who comes through the doors of Tibetan Buddhist Instiute. Upon his arrival in Australia in 2012, Geshe-la quickly learnt to speak English so that he can readily converse with his Australian students and also offer one of his Buddhist philosophy classes in English.
Born in Tibet and escaping into exile in 1984, Geshe-la entered Sera Jey Monastery in South India and was taken under the care of Kyabje Khensur Kangyurwa Rinpoche, who later became the Founder of Tibetan Buddhist Institute.
Having entered the Lharampa class – akin to a six year long set of post graduate studies – in 1995, Geshe-la continued to excel in the latter part of his Geshe degree studies. Geshe-la attained a Lharampa Geshe Degree of the First Division (highest among the three classes awarded to Lharampa Geshes of the Three Monastic Seats), and the prestigious honour of scoring highest among all of Sera Jey Monastery’s Lharampa Geshes of that year. He completed his eighteen years of philosophical studies in 2002.
